Update on Medical Mission to Colombia…

A personal message from Rick and Vicki Werkman…

medical ministry international logoApproximately a year ago, Rick and I were fundraising to participate in a medical mission project to Colombia with Medical Mission International (MMI). Our goal was to bring along five hockey bags full of medications, podiatric wound care and dental supplies, and provide medical foot care while there. Many of our patients and suppliers gave generously to this worthy cause. Unfortunately, due to the COVD-19 pandemic, this trip was postponed and will not be occurring in the foreseeable future.

Despite the pandemic, the medical needs in the community we were going to serve remain. With this in mind, we have decided to donate the money raised to support the local medical team in Columbia. The local team consists of 2 Family Physicians, 2 Dentists, 2 Dental Hygienists, 1 Nutritionist, and about 14 others who assist with Integrated Health, Men’s Health and the general project organization. These team members are all Colombians who are either part of the core MMI Amazon team full-time or Colombians who believe in MMI’s impact and volunteer their time to help on specific projects. The money we raised will help replenish their medical supplies for the project and provide food and gas for the two boats for the team while they are serving.

Since this is an endeavour close to our hearts, we still hope to donate our time and skills volunteering on a Medical Mission project once the pandemic is over. Stay tuned!
