What Are Custom Made Foot Orthotics?

march breakMarch Break is around the corner!

We’re often asked about orthotics – especially orthotics for children! Here are answers to some of the popular questions we are asked most often. If you have a question that isn’t covered here, connect with us! We’re happy to help.

What is an orthotic?

An orthotic is a biomechanical device that is custom-made to fit your feet – and only your feet. They are not “in-stock” and don’t come off a rack or shelf. Chiropodists and Podiatrists are the only licensed and trained professionals who are experts in foot care and biomechanics.

Orthotics may look like “arch supports”, but true biomechanical orthotics do not work on the principle of simply supporting the arch. Instead, custom-made orthotics realign the foot by applying corrective pressure where it is needed. Orthotics can help your feet perform at peak efficiency. That’s a great thing!

What are orthotics used for?

pronation patternsOrthotics are used to control the degree of pronation and supination of the foot when walking, running, skating, skiing, or participating in other sports. These devices can help to alleviate the pain and discomfort you may suffer from conditions such as arthritis and joint pain and foot disorders such as fallen arches, heel spurs, bunions, sport injuries, etc.

Some of the consequences of improper foot mechanics include:
• Plantar fasciitis (heel pain)
• Morton’s Neuroma (pain or numbness in the toes)
• Tendonitis
• Bunions
Ingrown toenails

Orthotics for Children

A Registered Chiropodist may determine that a child needs biomechanical orthotic devices to improve foot and leg function. These devices will fit into the child’s footwear and help the foot perform at its peak efficiency at rest, play, or when competing in sports. By controlling foot function, accommodating deformities and other anomalies, the foot will be given a chance to grow correctly.

Orthotics for Adults

Orthotics may be recommended for adults who need better shock absorption because of conditions such as arthritis, atrophy of the fibro fatty padding, or a desire to enhance overall comfort or sports performance and longevity.

Orthotics for the Entire Family

People living with diabetes, heel spurs, sesamoiditis, metatarsalgia, pes cavus (high arch) and pes planus (flat feet), ingrown toenails, ulcers and wounds, or corns and calluses may also benefit from the use of custom-made foot orthotics. Only your Chiropodist knows for sure!
